Western Tanager | Boise Migration

We’ve been invaded here in Boise by the migrating Western Tanager. What’s a Western Tanager you ask? It’s this:

Just this morning through afternoon and evening we watched (for the first time) four of these beautiful birds dinning and playing in our yard! At first we had NO idea what they were. We were amazed to learn later, that they are not as common as a sparrow and/or robin and that some of the older ‘birders’ had never seen one until this week! what? We truly feel priviledged, they are lovely.

    Hi Coleen,

I’ve never seen them before until this last week either and they really did it right for us. There were hundreds in the neighborhood. Literally there was a half a dozen of these pretty little birds in every yard. I actually watched one of my neighbors hand feed one (I had no such luck however).

The really strange part was that we had SO many around my house/neighborhood and I had friends on the other side of town that never saw a single one. This weekend there are a few stragglers left, but most have moved on… I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to photography them and enjoy having them around for the short time. It has really been lots of fun.

    I appreciate you stopping by.
