Main Salmon River | Rafting

§ August 21st, 2010 § Filed under Landscape, Mountains, Rivers § 1 Comment

This past week we were counted among the fortunate that had the privilege of spending 81 miles on the Main Salmon River.  This Idaho River is rich in history.   The banks are littered with old cabins and every rapid has a story of trials and hardships for those that paved the way and tamed this great river.

The flows were fantastic, the river was peaceful, and I got some much needed R&R.  All play and no photography isn’t right, so of course the camera accompanied me on this journey.  I now have the good fortune to be able share the photos of a very remote place.  This has to be one of my favorite rivers for a late season float.  The relaxing water and remote location really make a trip to remember…

Spent the evening with a super fun couple:  Allow me to introduce Donny (the Don) and Krista to you all.  We met up in Boise’s North End.  After a little neighborhood time and a walk with the dogs through Camel’s Back Park and the foot hills we migrated to the Hyde Park Pub for a quick photo (where they had their first date) and a cold one.  Talk about an evening well spent.

Donny and Krista, thank you for the wonderful evening (and for introducing us to buffalo chips).  We had such a great time.  The photos from this evening are going to be fantastic, but you don’t have to take my word for it because here’s your sneak peek….  P.S. that last photo is MY favorite (I think it needs to be your Christmas card).  Congratulations, we are excited for you two.

River of No Return

There are few things in life that can be as healing and as nurturing as spending time with nature.  In just a few short days I have the good fortune to be spending a week on the Main Salmon River.  We will float 84miles from Corn Creek (near Salmon Idaho) to Vinegar Creek (near Riggins, Idaho).  On the river, time moves slower.  The river has no place to be and it can not be rushed, pushed, scheduled, or put on any agenda.  Camera will be in tow and I can not wait…  And because no post is complete without a photos:

River Rafting on Hells Canyon in a Fire Storm, Summer 2007 - a Photo by Johnny Harrell of Shoeless Johnny Photography in Boise, Idaho

This photo was made on the Snake River in the summer of 2007.  The river burned on both sides for most of the 40 mile stretch of river that is typically floated (Battle Creek Complex and Poe Cabin fires).  We ended up having to take a jet boat back to the dam because of the take out was on fire and access had been restricted to fire crew only.

Good morning and happy Friday.  We have exciting news today.  Do you recall that we recently updated the ShoelessJohnny.com website.  Well, it was hard not to notice how “long in the tooth” the SJPWeddings.com website was in comparison.  What did that mean?  It means that we built a new website, that is cleaner, more modern, and uses better management technology so it is easier to access with your mobile device and easier for me to update (that’s the part I really like).  Here’s a quick screen grab of the new design.  To celebrate, I’m taking 25% off any regularly priced wedding or guest book/album that is ordered in the month of August.  I’m also going to discount all wedding related prints on metals by 25% during the month of August as well.  If you want a really cool (and substantial) way to display a photo, there’s nothing that can beat getting prints on metal.  The metal replaces the paper in this process and the image is placed on a 1mm thick aluminum plate and covered with nice layer of clear coat.  Think Italian sports car quality wrapped around all the people you love.  If you want to get in on the sale, contact me directly.

Ok, that’s enough from me, go take a look and let us know what you think by leaving a comment or dropping us a line.

Boise Twilight Criterium | SJP Style

§ July 18th, 2010 § Filed under Bicycle, Boise, Cycling, Idaho § 2 Comments

Boise has been my home now for a little over 10 years. I moved here after a 5 year stint in Montana in 2000. There are a number of things that are quintessentially “Boise” in my mind. Very few of those “thing” are as strong of a representation of what Boise is to me like the Twilight Criterium. The Boise Twilight Criterium is in it’s 23rd year of goodness. The heart of downtown is closed and a race course is erected consisting of four hard right hand turns (some more than a full 90°). Think NASCAR, but with actual athletes and no stink of gasoline. That means “rubbing is racing” and the action and excitement is high. Riders in the pro categories average 33mph for 1.5 hours. When the peloton passes it creates it’s own breeze that roars past with a rush of cow bells, clickers, and screams of “allez” (essentially meaning “go” in french). If you’ve never been, it’s highly recommended. It’s good fun for the whole family.

It was another excellent year for the Twilight Criterium. Here are a few photos of the fun. I hope you enjoy.
